FUN HOUSE: A Sin City Musical
FUN HOUSE: A Sin City Musical
May 5 & 6, 2017 | 8:30pm
A collision of concert and theater, narrative and freestyle, Fun House is a feverish roller coaster of theatrical acrobatics.
Fun House is the premiere staged song cycle of hip hop/soul duo Sin City (Verbal the Rapper and Icarus V)’s sophomore album of the same name. In collaboration with director Deena Selenow and playwright Bernardo Cubría, Sin City’s inherently theatrical lyrics and storytelling style will serve as the foundation for this visceral narrative about love, not-love, rising high, falling down, f*cking up and friendship.
Sin City met and worked together in NYC after separately exploring various artistic fields, from acting to Slam Poetry– even recording their own solo material for years before joining forces after meeting at NYU. Their varied backgrounds were a perfect blend for developing their Hip-Hop/Soul inspired sound. In Feb 2012, the duo released their debut album, a moody, energetic, and sexy lyrical adventure, entitled The Sin City LP. The duo first collaborated with director Deena Selenow and playwright Bernardo Cubría on the 2015 west coast premiere of Cubría’s play/game show/forum/party The Judgment of Fools, produced by Ammunition Theatre Company.
Alabama born Brandon Scott (Icarus V) can be seen in the upcoming Showtime series Guerrilla starring Idris Elba and Frida Pinto, was recently in Lionsgate’s Blair Witch, and was a recurring character on Grey’s Anatomy. Brandon is a founding member of IAMA Theatre Company and Ammunition Theatre Company.
Brooklyn native Malcolm Barrett (Verbal the Rapper) was in the Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker, played Lem in the ABC cult hit Better Off Ted (entire cast featured in his single/video “Revenge of the Nerds” off his debut solo album, The Backpacker’s Guide to the Galaxy), has an Ovation Award for lead actor (The Recommendation) and currently stars as ‘Rufus’ on NBC’s Timeless. Malcolm is a founding member of Ammunition Theatre Company.
NYC born Deena Selenow is a director for live performance and the director of Oxy Arts at Occidental College. Her work has been seen at REDCAT, LATC, La Jolla Playhouse WoW Festival, East West Players, The Skirball Cultural Center, Highways Performance Space, Machine Project, Company of Angels and The Hammer Museum, among other spaces and places in NY and LA. She is an inaugural member of the Theatre Communications Group SPARK Leadership Cohort, a branch of the TCG Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Institute.
Bernardo Cubría is a Mexican Playwright. His play Neighbors is a semi-finalist for the O’Neil Playwrights Conference in 2017. His other play The Judgment of Fools has had full productions at INTAR in NYC, at Ammunition Theatre Company in Los Angeles and at Horsehead Theatre Company in Houston, Texas. His play The Redhead Is Coming was part of F*ckfest at The Brick Theatre in NYC. Bernardo also hosts the theatre podcast Off and On: A New York Theatre Podcast, and is a member of Ammunition Theatre Company. And he acts sometimes too.
